There are many things that we do in our individual lives daily that are unhealthy and reduces our chances to a happy life. We do most of these things not knowing the disastrous effects they are having in our lives.
A great amount of self-control is required to develop good habits and to stop the bad ones. Breaking bad habits does not happen overnight, and sometimes we might not even know we possess such habits until somebody points it out to us or after it starts affecting our day to day life.
The first step to getting rid of bad habits is accepting you have a problem and that you might need assistance solving the problem.
During my research journey I met various people from different parts of the world, so writing this article was quite easy. Here are some habits I notice that most people exhibit that usually has a negative impact on their lifestyle.
1. Complaining all the time
We all have this habit of complaining about little things in our day to day life. But sometimes we can make complaining a habit to the extent that it becomes unhealthy and it affects us negatively.
Those around you become tired of hearing you complain about your job, relationship, or anything else. If you constantly find fault or focus on things that are not working out in your life, you end up hurting yourself more.
Rather than complaining, embrace the positive things around you and be grateful for what you have. Focus on the places you can make changes and you will live a better life.
Complaining about every little thing will make people avoid you. When they see your call, they make excuses not to talk to you or when they notice you’re coming their way they hide so they don’t have to speak with you.
When you complain a lot, you surround yourself with negative energy that no one wants to be around.
Nobody wants to be associated with toxicity and complaining over every little thing is toxic to you and the person you are complaining to.
Self-doubt simply means a lack of confidence in yourself and your abilities. This happens mostly when things are not going as planned for you but seems to be okay for everyone else.
Self-doubt has always been an obstacle to living a happy and fulfilled life. It’s that little voice in your head that tells you that you are not good enough and that you won’t be able to do what you set out to achieve.
Sometimes, you begin to believe those words without even knowing it. Learn to adapt that that voice into a positive message you can tell yourself daily.
Self-doubt can hold you back from opportunities, and it makes getting things started or finishing things harder than they need to be. It holds you back in life rather than allow you to move forward.
To get rid of self-doubt can be an extremely difficult task. It takes lots of time and extra effort for you to work on yourself and build your confidence to that level where that little voice can no longer lead your life.
3. Blaming others
Not wanting to take the blame when things go south is normal human behaviour. That doesn’t make it a good habit to indulge in. It’s a toxic habit we ought to avoid.
Sometimes we tend to blame others for our misfortunes rather than accept the blame. This is unhealthy and it makes us unhappy and it also affects our mental wellbeing.
Blaming others for our fault is time-consuming and energy-draining and until you learn to take responsibility for your own actions and stop blaming others you can not take back your own power.
It is your duty to help yourself to be strong enough to own up to your faults and be accountable for your actions. when you keep shifting blames to others around you instead of accepting your faults, you are training yourself to be weak-minded.
4. Criticizing others
Criticism usually comes from a deep suited need to be perfect and also expecting those around us to be. However, it doesn’t work that way because nobody is perfect and it might be difficult for people around you to do things like you do or behave the way you wish.
Mild criticism is not always a bad thing, but sometimes when you begin to criticize too much, and making it second nature to you, then there is a problem.
When you criticize others you end up wasting your time and energy on trivial things. And it tends to not only affect your mental health alone but that of others around you.
5. Being overtly bossy
Bossiness is usually not a bad habit to possess, especially when you are in a corporate environment. It’s okay to come off as bossy so that those under you do not take you for granted.
However, being too bossy can affect you and the people around you negatively. When you are extremely bossy it can affect your relationship with those around you and also affect your mental health and well-being.
Some people are naturally bossy. They like to be the boss in their relationships, their friendships and any aspect pertaining to their life. They generally don’t care about the feelings of those around them or how it affects them.
They are so busy dictating to others and telling them what to do that they forget to live out their life. When you learn to demonstrate responsibility and collaboration instead of dictating to those around you, you gain respect and confidence.
6. Being Manipulative
To manipulate simply means to control or influence a person or situation cleverly or unscrupulously. Sometimes we as humans turn to manipulation to get what we want from people when they are not willing to do or agree to our demands.
Most times people do not realize that they are being manipulated, and others may end up using this influence over them to cause them to harm or hurt their feelings.
Manipulation has become a way of life for so many people that they tend to see nothing wrong in manipulating others. They don’t see how toxic it is, not only to them but to the people being manipulated.
When you manipulate others you tend to cross important boundaries and risk your own happiness. Instead of manipulating go straight for what you want and try to convince others to come along with you.
Procrastination can be seen as the habitual or intentional delay of starting or finishing a task despite knowing it might have negative consequences.
We all have a tendency to procrastinate. It’s a common behavioural trait we all possess. But it can be toxic when we make it a daily part of our lives.
When you find yourself always procrastinating in every task you set out to achieve, you should know that you have a problem.
Procrastination is one of those things you need to get rid of to live a happy and fulfilled life. It tends to stop you from reaching your goals more effectively than any other external obstacle.
Take baby steps today in achieving your goals. It does not have to be much but just do something no matter how little every day.
You can easily start by identifying what needs to be done for the week and getting them done in advance. By avoiding procrastination, you can use the extra time you get to make plans and get ahead in your life.
8. Avoiding your problems
Avoiding your problems usually comes with more harm than good in your life. As individuals, we normally choose to take the easier route of avoiding our problems.
Sometimes it is usually not the challenges we are avoiding, but the fallout of the situation.
Whether it’s the fallout or the problem itself that is causing avoidance it does not matter and as an individual, we should learn to face our problems head-on and not take the easy way out.
When you make avoiding your challenges a part of your life, your life becomes toxic and unhealthy and your problems pile up and begin to weigh you down, especially when the problems become too much of a burden.
Instead of avoiding your problems, why not try to face them today? The funny thing about challenges is that no matter how long you avoid them, you still have to face them at some point. So why not face them today before it grows into something worse.
9. Living a lie
You should never live a pretentious life in other to elevate yourself among your peers.
Trying to be what you are not or comparing yourself to others is unhealthy and it might seem like the wise thing for you to do, but eventually, it can end up having disastrous consequences.
Being yourself is the best thing you can do your health and mental wellbeing.
Be happy with who you are and celebrate yourself. Don’t compare yourself to anyone else and be grateful in any position you find yourself. Look in the mirror and see who you are and build on that foundation
This toxic habit of telling tall tales just to elevate yourself is the worst thing you can do. You can get so caught up living a lie that you forget to actually live out your dreams. And when the truth does come out, you will discover you lost more than you ever gained through pretence.
Smoking is one of the most unhealthy habits people indulge in, and it’s one of the leading causes of preventable death globally.
Smoking is one bad habit I am glad I quit earlier on before it began to have its toll on my life.
Smoking has a lot of negative effects on the human body and can be quite addictive. Quitting smoking might be difficult to do but for the sake of your health and well-being, you need to stop before it does major damage to your health.
You can always pick up a new and better habit that you can resort to when the urge to smoke sets in. You can also pick up a pickle, or chewing gum when you have the urge to smoke.
11. Eating excessive junk food
Junk food can be found anywhere you look in today’s society. Snacks such as fries, burgers, ice-creams and even sodas are slowly destroying the health of many people in our community.
Too much consumption of junk food in the body can be harmful to you, and it’s best to reduce consumption to the barest minimal.
A better alternative to junk foods like vegetables and other healthy snacks will do more good for your health than sugar-laced drinks and snacks.
Unhealthy habits can be really toxic and harmful to our health, self-esteem, and even to those around us.
There are some habits which might not be too good for us that we find ourselves doing at times, these habits become a problem when we no longer have control over them and they become an integral part of our daily lives.
You might find yourself guilty of a few of these habits. Don’t beat yourself over it. You might find difficulty in changing all at ones and that’s ok too.
Changing habits does not happen overnight. It involves a gradual process, repeated continuously over a prolonged period of time, and before you know it, you begin to see positive results.
